Religion holds us back.

I understand that religious is a very touchy subject, though I find it to have held humanity back centuries. Religion has done much less good for humanity, than it has done bad.  The Dark Ages were a product of religion.  The Dark Ages not only didn't allow humanity to further itself, it sent humanity backwards.  Innovations were lost forever, and 500 years were wasted in war, which left many poor and dead, and a handful of families ruling Europe.  Even after the Dark Ages many philosophers' works were stopped and some philosophers were even killed by the church for being "heretics".  Religion also belittles women's role in society, and the rights of women still aren't equal to the rights of men in many parts of the world.  Religion has also led to, or been basis for, many atrocities committed by humanity, such as the Holocaust, the genocide in Sudan, the conflict in Rwanda, a majority of the conflicts southeastern Asia, the Israeli-Palestinian war, and many others.  If humanity never brought religion upon itself it would be far better off than it is today.  Though religion has led to all of these troubles, it did, at one point, help humanity, for it governed people in ages past before there was a legal system to deal with criminals, or sinners.  Overall humanity would be not only better off, but in a stage none of us can imagine. imagine if we lived in 3011, that is how it would feel.

  3. I agree because I also feel that in the course of history, it wouldve been better off if there was no religion because it caused so much conflict.

  4. Too pro, dude, too pro. I definitely agree with what religion holding humanity back, though I don't believe that religion has to hold humanity back. Religion does have its purposes, but I personally believe that humanity is the one that forces themselves onto wars, and they use religion as justification. They could also be incredibly overzealous.

  6. You have so many comments, I feel left out~
Anyways, I agree that without religion, we would have gotten rid of a ton of problems by now. How many wars and homicides occurred because of religion? In my opinion, religion was just started because people needed to have something to hold on to, since they got desperate in dark times.

  8. The Holocausts, my friend, were not motivated by religion. hitler, quite honestly, saw the Aryan race as a deity; Jews were expelled not because of their religion. They were seen more as an ethnic than religious grounds. As well, Sudan's genocide in Darfur was a conflict between Arab African Muslim nomabds, residing in the north, and Black African Muslim farmers, residing in the west. The war was fueled by the need for grazing land on the part of the Arabs. There was no religious motivation. The Islamic Holy Book, the Alcoran preaches religious tolerance, not genocide. Conflicts in Southeast Asia, startedby Communists, have caused serious disarray in the Southeast Asia. The Cambodian Khmer Rouge, for example, massacred a quarter of it's population, 2 million people, in less than a decade; the Spanish inquisition took 300+ years to kill 3,000 people. And this is figure does not all state the maximum extent of atheist atrocities. Secularist France massacred 14,000 Frenchmen, many of whom were Catholic clergymen, during the reign of terror. While it took Roman Christians 270+ years to become intolerant, Secular and Atheist governments have hit the gorund running. To say that religion does less for us than Atheism is absurd. Kirk.
